[0:00] You can be turning in your Bible to 1 John chapter 1. This past week and parts of the coming week has been Pastor Thompson's week off. And so I volunteered to preach for him today.

[0:12] And so we're going to go one more week without a sermon in Luke. And today we're going to look and resume walking through the book of 1 John. We looked at the first four verses in October.

[0:25] And today we're going to read the whole chapter again. We're going to look at verses 5 through 10. 1 John chapter 1.

[1:57] Let's pray. Lord, I thank you for your word. I thank you for the ability we have to read things that this disciple of yours, this apostle, has heard from you and then has written for the church for thousands of years to read and meditate on.

[2:18] Lord, we ask that you would apply it to our hearts. Lord, as we look at these statements that John makes, that we would be critical of ourselves. We would see how does your word call us to change?

[2:31] How does it call us to throw ourselves onto Christ? In Jesus' name, amen. So we're looking at this book, the book of 1 John.

[2:42] And this section here, what I want us to get, the big idea that I want us to really walk away with is that true fellowship with God is only possible when we walk in the light, when we embrace truth, when we confess our shortcomings, when we remind ourselves of God's grace and forgiveness.

[3:01] So if I asked you to think of one-word attributes or one-word characteristics of God and then told you to pick one that starts with the letter L, you probably would pick love.

[3:16] Most of us would jump to the word love. It's common. It's even mentioned in this book of 1 John. In chapter 4, verse 8, John says that God is love. But scripture also tells us that God is light.

[3:30] He is holy. He's perfect. He's sinless. He's not like us at all. Verse 5 of our passage says, This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

[3:46] This theme of light and darkness is started all throughout the Bible. Light represents holiness and purity, righteousness and truth. Darkness represents sin, rebellion, lawlessness and evil.

[3:58] And scripture is clear, even from the beginning of Genesis, that light and darkness, good and evil, do not mix. God is holy.

[4:10] God cannot tolerate evil. As Habakkuk 1.13 says, You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong.

[4:21] Paul makes it clear and explicit when he talks to the church in Corinth. He says, What partnership does righteousness have with lawlessness? What fellowship has light with darkness?

[4:34] So here's the problem. God is light. God is pure. God is holy. He's light. We are not. God is holy.

[4:45] He's set apart. He's altogether different than us. He's righteous. He's holy. We are, by nature, darkness. And scripture reveals God as light, not only to show us who he is, not just to list an attribute of who he is, but God shows us that God is light, so that we also know why we need to be saved.

[5:07] Isaiah experienced this firsthand in Isaiah chapter 6. Well, this passage doesn't explicitly mention God is light. It does describe what happens when a sinner encounters the holy.

[5:21] Listen to Isaiah chapter 6, verses 1 through 6. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up. And the train of his robe filled the temple.

[5:33] Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings. With two he covered his face. And with two he covered his feet. And with two he flew. And one called to another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.

[5:49] The whole earth is full of his glory. And the foundations of the threshold shook. And the voice of him who called, at the voice of him who called. And the house was filled with smoke.

[6:00] And I said, Woe is me, for I am lost. I am a man of unclean lips. And I dwell in the midst of the people of unclean lips. My eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.

[6:12] Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And then verse 7. And he touched my mouth and said, Behold, this has touched your lips.

[6:23] Your guilt is taken away. And your sin atoned for. Isaiah realized quickly that here was the God he'd been serving all his life. Here's a God he'd worshipped.

[6:35] We read about all the feasts and things that God had called Israelites to do in Leviticus chapter 23. And Isaiah had done them. He participated in those. He was familiar with those.

[6:46] He had done all the rites that God had called Israel to do. But when he saw God and his holiness, when he saw that he was declared holy, holy, holy, utterly, completely holy, he recognized the gap between his sin and impurity and God's purity.

[7:06] He saw his own iniquity against the light of God's holiness and realized he was a goner. The only way he could persist in the presence of God was if somehow he could be made pure.

[7:21] If God could make him pure. If we're going to have any connection or any fellowship or relationship with our holy creator, we need someone that's going to bridge that gap.

[7:33] We need a redeemer, a savior. We need the light that would enter the world in its darkness and rescue his people. Paul describes how God, through Christ, accomplished this in Colossians chapter 1, where he says, He, God the Father, has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption and forgiveness of sins.

[7:59] So John makes the case over and over and over again in the Gospel of John that Jesus is a light from God. The light of God made visible. He says in John 1, 18, No one has ever seen God, the only God, who is at the Father's hand.

[8:17] He has made him known. So Jesus is a light of the world, the light of God that's been shown into the world. Earlier in the chapter, in John 1, John declares Jesus was a light of God shown into the world.

[8:32] So bright, even in his veiled flesh, darkness cannot overcome it. It says in John 1, 4 through 9, In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

[8:45] The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through him.

[8:56] He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. Not only John, but Jesus himself repeatedly said the same things.

[9:09] He said that he is the light of the world. He said that people love darkness rather than light, and that only those who believe in the light would become sons of light. So as we come to this passage in 1 John 1, John's not introducing a new idea.

[9:26] He's not coming up with something for the first time. He's teaching the truth that he learned as a disciple of Jesus. And he wants us to get this concept. He wants the church to get this concept.

[9:40] If God is light, and if Christ is a light who has come into the world, then how do sinners live in fellowship with a holy God? If God is light, and if Christ is a light who has come into the world, then how do sinners live in fellowship with such a holy God?

[9:58] John answers that question with five if-then statements. You're familiar with these, right? It says, if this is the case, then this is true.

[10:12] And so he lists five statements in this passage that we can look at that kind of walk us through understanding how does sinful people, how do sinful people fellowship with a holy God?

[10:24] And the first one is, if we say that we have fellowship with God, while we continue to walk in darkness, then we lie and do not practice the truth.

[10:36] That's what verse six says. If we say we have fellowship with him, while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. This is one of those passages that I think sometimes strikes fear into Christians.

[10:50] And rightly so, it is a warning that John has given, and it could be that there are false teachers that John is addressing that may have been spreading lies, saying things like, you can have fellowship with God.

[11:02] It doesn't matter if you sin. The sin is just in your body. It's fine. You can just, just sin is its own thing. You just got to fellowship with God. God will take care of it all. And John is saying, no, you cannot continue to walk in darkness and have fellowship with God.

[11:18] You're lying. The phrase continue to walk in darkness is speaking of a lifestyle of living, of staying, of continuously remaining in darkness, in evil, in sin, unbothered by sin and darkness.

[11:36] It's a choosing. He uses the word walk, but I was thinking, it's like jogging. It's intentional. You know, you're doing it on purpose. People jog or run on purpose sometimes. And so, it's something that they're doing on purpose.

[11:50] You're not just passive. Walking in darkness, continuing to walk in darkness, is a lifestyle. And look, this could look any number of ways, right? We could, ways that we could look like somebody is walking in darkness, but saying they have fellowship with God.

[12:10] Imagine a man, maybe, who serves as a deacon, but he meets somebody and he falls in love with the woman that's not his wife. And he commits adultery or a fornication with her and then has no desire to repent, no conviction that he's done anything wrong.

[12:28] He's content to live in his sin. Imagine a teenager who attends church every week. They sing worship songs and they talk about their faith with their church friends, but outside of those moments, they often freely and happily engage in gossip and lying, drunkenness, maybe drug abuse, pornography.

[12:50] They're hurting and abusing other people just to maintain their popularity. They're claiming that they have fellowship with God while continuing to walk in darkness. Their actions reveal a heart that's content to remain and continue walking in darkness.

[13:07] It's important for us to understand here that John is not calling people or calling Christians that are struggling with their sin to despair. John is not saying, if you sin, you're done for.

[13:21] He's calling us to honesty. John's goal here is not to terrify the sincere believer, but to expose those false claims of fellowship.

[13:33] John doesn't leave us with just a warning, though. He immediately turns to the positive counterpart, which is the mark of genuine fellowship. And he says, if we walk in the light as he is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another.

[13:49] And the blood of Jesus, his son, cleanses us from all sin. Previous verses address those who claim they have fellowship with God while they continue to walk in darkness.

[14:02] And this if-then statement now turns to the opposite case. Those who walk in the light will experience fellowship and the realities that flow from walking in the light.

[14:15] And those that walk in the light will see two consequences. Now, consequences aren't negative. They are the outcomes of our actions, the outcomes of reality. And so those that walk in the light will see two consequences.

[14:26] First, they'll see fellowship with other believers. Holiness, walking in the light, obeying God's commands, doing what he's called us to do, supports and fosters our fellowship with one another.

[14:39] Darkness destroys it. Walking and staying in the darkness hinders our fellowship with God, but it also hinders it with each other. When we come to church and we hide our sin, when we pretend that our sin doesn't exist, fellowship starts to break down.

[14:57] You might wonder, how does fellowship break down because we hide our sin? Well, maybe we come to church feeling like a hypocrite because we know the sin. Maybe we avoid conversations or people that may confront our sin.

[15:13] We act like things are fine, but inside we know we've got a festering, stinking sin that we refuse to address. Walking in the light doesn't mean confessing every sin to every person.

[15:25] It does mean, though, living openly before God, confessing our sin to God, talking to each other about sins that we know we need help with, bringing them out into the light.

[15:37] We repent of our sin, we see the evil of it, the harm of it, and we quickly seek to return to walking in the light. Those who truly know God, those who have been brought from darkness into light, they're going to want to walk in the light.

[15:53] Not perfectly, and not as perfectly as they would like. It will take longer for us to feel like we're walking in the light, the order we get, but they desire the light, and they'll grow to hate the darkness when they encounter it.

[16:11] They'll grow to hate their returns to darkness. The second benefit, or the consequence, of walking in the light is the blood of Christ, Jesus' Son, cleanses us from all sin.

[16:25] Now, this cleansing is not just a one-time you're clean. We are justified. One time, we're fully justified. This cleansing is a continual cleansing. It's not a conditional cleansing.

[16:36] And it doesn't mean that we're going to be continually having to be our sins atoned for. As one commentator puts it, this does not mean our holy behavior earns us cleansing. Rather, walking in the light shows that we are among those who have been cleansed.

[16:51] So, walking in the light is evidence of our cleansing, not the cause. The cleansing flows from Christ's blood, not our performance.

[17:03] We aren't earning or securing the cleansing of our sin. Those that walk in the light, the light walkers, if you will, are walking in the light revealed to them in Jesus Christ.

[17:16] And His blood is cleansing them from their past, present, and future sins. Those that walk in the light will see more and more of their sin. John anticipates that reality when he comes to the next if-then statement in chapter 8.

[17:34] He says, If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If you've been a Christian for any number of years, you know that you have sin.

[17:47] You know you sin and it becomes more and more evident the longer you walk in the light. It's not just that we commit sin or just do the occasional sin.

[17:59] We have sin. We are sinners by nature. We're born with it. We carry it with us wherever we go. As I thought through this passage of the idea that it's a lie to say we have no sin, and I was thinking about struggle with sin and the idea of light shining, this illustration came to mind.

[18:20] I want you to imagine you're outside in a bright, cloudless day. The sun's low or hidden and your shadow is faint. Sometimes you barely notice your shadow at all. Within the sight, the sun shines at full strength.

[18:35] Your shadow becomes sharp, defined. It's easy to see. The light's not creating the shadow. The shadow is there. The light is simply revealing it.

[18:45] John says in 1 John 1.8, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. In other words, the person who claims to be without sin is not standing in brighter light but in deeper darkness.

[19:01] Walking in the light does not make us more sinful. It makes us more honest. As God's light shines on us, his holiness, his truth, his love, through his word, we become increasingly aware of what still remains in us that does not belong.

[19:19] The more we walk in the light, the more clearly we see the shadow we're carrying. But here's the key. God commands no darkness. No darkness at all is allowed.

[19:31] This is God's nature. It's his standard. No darkness. Yet everywhere we go, a shadow follows us. We can't outrun it. We can't pretend that the shadow isn't there.

[19:44] We can't step far enough into the light to make it disappear. The Christian life then is not about denying the shadow. We're all aware of our sin and darkness. It's about refusing to hide it.

[19:56] When we stop pretending we're spotless, sinless people and instead we bring what remains of our darkness into the light, it can then be dealt with. Verse 9 and our fourth if-then statements brings us to the remedy to how do we deal with this sin.

[20:15] We've seen that God is holy. We've seen that we cannot say we have no sin. Verse 9 says, if we confess our sins and he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

[20:31] And this is really the peak of the passage. This is the ultimate answer to how do we walk in the light as people who know that we're also sinful people.

[20:43] If you've attracted me so far to this point or maybe you're just walking in, we've seen that God's holy, he's light, we're naturally darkness, but Christ has come into the world as light.

[20:56] The darkness has not overcome him. Christ has been victorious over sin and death and even though we sin today, we're cleansed by his blood.

[21:08] Jesus now shows us how to walk in the light. When we see our sin illuminated by the light, revealed by the Holy Spirit, we walk in the light by confessing our sins to God.

[21:22] He already knows them. He knows the sins we aren't even aware of. David prayed this from Psalm 19. He says, who can discern his errors declare me innocent from hidden faults.

[21:37] And this really is the hope and the joy of the gospel, isn't it? The promise here that if we confess our sins, that God is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins.

[21:49] He's faithful because he's promised to do it, but he's just because Christ has already paid the price for them. God doesn't just wipe them away and ignore them.

[22:00] God is just because Christ has paid the penalty for our sin. He's faithful to forgive, faithful to cleanse us from all, all of our unrighteousness.

[22:12] Not just the sins you can think about, not just the ones you've committed in the past 24 hours. God promises to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

[22:24] We saw in verse 7, the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin. Christ's blood secured our justification, declaring us righteous before God.

[22:36] So verses 7 and 9 aren't saying we need to walk and confess in order to be righteous or justified or saved. They're saying since God is holy and since we still sin, sin still matters.

[22:51] It still grieves God. It disrupts our fellowship with God. It disrupts our fellowship with each other. When we step back into darkness, we're not losing our salvation. When we sin, we're not losing forgiveness.

[23:04] But we do lose the joy of our communion with God. We lose our fellowship with God and with one another. When we walk in the light as He is in the light, we do so by agreeing with Him.

[23:15] By agreeing with Him that our sin was wrong and returning to the light. That's what it means to confess. To say, God, you said it was wrong for me to be angry.

[23:26] You said it was wrong for me to steal, to commit lust in my heart, to lose my temper at my spouse and my children. You said it was wrong. And I agree with you.

[23:37] It was wrong. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. We walk in the light by agreeing with Him that our sin was wrong. We confess our sins to a forgiving God.

[23:47] not to earn forgiveness but to restore our fellowship. If forgiveness were to depend on our perfect confession, we'd all be lost.

[24:01] There's no way that any of us could remember every single sin that we've ever committed. Forgiveness and justification rests on Christ. Confession just restores what we've disrupted.

[24:13] In a moment, we're going to come to the Lord's Supper. And we often read the Heidelberg Catechism question 81 which asks, Who should come to the Lord's table?

[24:25] And the answer is, Those who are displeased with themselves because of their sins. But who nevertheless trust that their sins are pardoned and that their remaining weakness is covered by the suffering and death of Christ and who desire more and more to strengthen their faith and lead a better life.

[24:43] So John is now going to close out this section of 1 John, this chapter, by returning to denial, showing us just how serious it is to reject what God truly says about sin.

[24:55] The fifth if-then statement then is, If we say we've not sinned, then we make him a liar and his word is not in us. This sounds very similar to verse 8 which says, If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

[25:11] The difference is subtle. But the point is, regardless of whether we say we haven't sinned or we don't even have sin, both of those statements are wrong.

[25:23] If we say we haven't sinned, we make God a liar because God says there is no one righteous, not even one. All have sinned. All have fallen short of the glory of God. Sin affects us all.

[25:34] That's what it means to be human. No one in this room today can rightly say they have not sinned or that they have no sin. None of us.

[25:46] If you're sitting here and you're thinking, I'm not a bad person, I've never killed anybody, you're making God to be a liar because God says that all have sinned. The point is, everybody has sinned and has sinned and needs to be forgiven.

[26:02] No one gets to say they're good enough. Only one person throughout all of eternal human history can make the claim that he has not sinned. Only one person can claim that they have no sin and that's Jesus Christ, the righteous.

[26:20] So as we come to the Lord's Supper in just a moment, I want to look at a final if-then statement that John has in chapter 2. We're familiar with this passage.

[26:31] 1 John 2, 1 and 2 says, My little children are writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.

[26:46] He is the propitiation for our sins, not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. Brothers and sisters, if you do sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.

[27:02] He is the propitiation, the satisfying sacrifice that pays and atones for our sin. This table is a reminder that Jesus' blood was shed, his body was broken, to bring us into his kingdom, to transfer us in the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom of his beloved Son.

[27:22] It's an opportunity for us to confess our sins, to search out any hidden or secret sins that disturb or break our fellowship with God or with each other.

[27:34] The hope of the gospel is this. One day, night and darkness will be no more. We will need no lamp or sun, but the Lord God will be our light and we will reign forever and ever.

[27:50] On that day, in the full light of God, in the new heavens, in the new earth, as we stand ready to partake of the true final marriage feast of the Lamb, shadows and darkness will be done.

[28:02] When we're finally made to be like Christ, there will be no darkness left to even create a shadow. Let me pray. Lord, I thank you.

[28:13] I thank you for your word. I thank you for the ways that you call us to walk in the light as you are in the light, that you call us to live holy lives and you know that we are sinful and that no one is righteous, not even one.

[28:31] Yet you've made Christ to be the atoning sacrifice, the propitiation for our sin. Lord, help us as we now partake of the table, prepare our hearts, make us aware of sins that we need to confess, restore the fellowship that's broken, bring us into unity and love together in Christ.

[57:39] Vivieron estos huesos secos, profetizó, predicó a estos huesos, profetizó al espíritu y vinieron estos huesos secos. Pero, ¿por qué todas estas cosas? Todo esto que hasta el momento nosotros estamos viendo.

[57:55] Mis hermanos, como muchos de los comentaristas dicen, este libro, este capítulo de Ezequiel no trata, el interés de este libro no es hablarnos de la resurrección.

[58:09] No, no, mis hermanos, no es hablarnos de la resurrección. El interés de estos versículos es hablarnos de la restauración de la nación de Israel.

[58:23] Es el propósito principal de estos versículos que Dios nos ha traído en el día de hoy. No es hablarnos de la resurrección, no, no, no. Es hablarnos de la restauración de la nación de Israel.

[58:35] ¿Cómo se sentían? ¿Cómo se sentía la nación de Israel? Para ellos, el vivir en el exilio, ellos consideraban que estaban muertos. Ellos se consideraban que estaban muriendo.

[58:47] Ellos se consideraban ya sin esperanza, no tenían esperanza. Estaban sin esperanza. Estaban, habían perdido la fe, habían perdido la confianza en el Señor.

[58:59] Y entonces, la Biblia es maravillosa, mis hermanos. Porque nos da la explicación de todo esto que nosotros hemos leído, nos da la explicación.

[59:11] Miren en el versículo 11 como dijo. Me dijo luego. Eso es Dios hablando con Ezequiel. Le dijo, me dijo luego, hijo de hombre. Todos estos huesos son la casa de Israel.

[59:26] Ustedes vieron, todos estos huesos secos son la casa de Israel. Lo mismo que él estaba diciendo. Ellos se sentían sin esperanza. Ellos se sentían que ya Dios no, ya Dios lo había abandonado.

[59:40] Ellos se sentían como muertos viviendo en el exilio, como cadáveres vivientes. Y Dios le está diciendo a Ezequiel.

[59:53] Estos huesos secos representan la casa de Israel. He aquí ellos dicen. Miren lo que decía la nación de Israel.

[60:04] He aquí ellos dicen. Nuestros huesos se secaron y pereció nuestra esperanza. Y somos del todo destruidos. Ellos se sentían así, mis hermanos.

[63:32] Supuestamente. Otras personas. Escriben metas. En una. En una hoja. Y la meta del año anterior. La queman. Yo no sabía esa. La queman.

[63:44] Y. Y guardan la. La meta del año. Que va a empezar. Otras personas. Cogen agua. Y la tiran hacia atrás. Otras personas. Incienso.

[63:54] Hacen también. Pero. Que. Mejor. Manera. De nosotros. Empezar el año. Pidiéndole a Dios.

[65:11] Hueso seco. Hay. En. Tu trabajo. Pero para decirlo. De una forma. Más sencilla. Cuántas personas. Sin Cristo. Hay en tu casa. Cuántas personas.

No es con nuestro esfuerzo No es con nuestra sabiduría No es por lo mucho que sepamos No es por lo mucho que hablemos Es por el poder de Dios Dios es quien da vida Dios es el dador de la vida Pero nosotros tenemos que ser como Ezequiel Ezequiel fue obediente a la palabra de Dios O Ezequiel cuando Dios le dijo profetiza Predica Ezequiel fue obediente Y eso es lo que Dios nos está diciendo a nosotros en estos momentos Dios nos está diciendo que prediquemos su palabra Dios nos está diciendo que le prediquemos a ese montón de huesos secos A ese montón de personas que están muertos espiritualmente Que necesitan el poder de Dios para que transformen su corazón Para que necesitan la palabra de Dios Necesitan el Espíritu de Dios El Espíritu Santo obrando en sus corazones Para que puedan tener vida

[66:44] Para que puedan tener esperanza Personas que están sin Cristo Como nosotros estábamos en otro tiempo Nosotros estábamos en la misma situación Estábamos sin Cristo en otro tiempo ¿Qué estás esperando?

[67:00] ¿Qué estás esperando? ¿Qué buen tiempo para nosotros empezar el año? Estamos perdiendo el tiempo mis hermanos Necesitamos predicar la palabra Necesitamos ser obediente a Dios Necesitamos llevar el Evangelio El mundo está necesitando de Cristo Y le plació a Dios salvar al hombre Salvar al mundo por medio de la locura de la predicación Mis hermanos Los tiempos son difíciles Como dice la palabra Los tiempos son malos Aprovechemos el tiempo No estemos entretenidos con las cosas del mundo Vamos a predicar esta palabra Así como estaba la nación de Israel Estábamos nosotros Éramos un montón de huesos Hemos recibido la palabra de Dios Dios nos salvó
